Marginalising household users in smart grids

چکیده
Unless just and inclusive, transitions to low carbon-energy systems are unlikely receive sufficient legitimacy broad public support. While research on inequalities injustices in energy is growing, these issues remain less explored the case of digitalisation through smart grids homes. This paper aims synthetise our understandings inequality, exclusion vulnerability by systemically analysing different dimensions marginalisation transition a digitalised electricity infrastructure Sweden. To exclusion, conceptualisations processes social science approaches studies reviewed. Moreover, an empirical analysis interviews with range Swedish actors such as utilities, housing developers or pensioner organisations carried out enriched previous grid users. The demonstrates what specific forms that diverse categories marginalisation, already identified generally studies, may take grids. We argue household users place along multiple dimensions, relating matters literacy, participation, infrastructure, economy. suggests bundles aspects concerning sustainable should be recognised addressed simultaneously.

We build a system dynamics model to evaluate the potential dynamics of consumer adoption of “Smart Energy Behaviour”. Within this term we include different levels of: i) shift in electricity consumption towards less costly-less polluting and congestioning hours; ii) the reduction of mainly wasteful electricity consumption, that maintains similar levels of comfort; iii) the enrolment in demand r...

Electricity grids are evolving to “smart grids”. Smart grids employ communication of supply and demand between participants of the grid to achieve better efficiency, availability, resilience, etc. than traditional grids. Consumer households are connected to the smart grid using smart metering and demand response. Smart metering communicates the household’s electricity consumption at high resolu...
